What does a Japanese-themed house look like?

Japanese homes are made distinctive with their spacious, airy layouts, high ceilings, and clean, straight lines. Their doors are open wide; they have big windows that allow natural light and lots of air inside the home. This is the reason why lights are unnecessary during the day. They are uncluttered, which means that their decorations and Japanese furniture are carefully thought out; they have to be beautiful and functional at the same time.

Japanese Homes

A Japanese home will typically showcase many stoneware and wooden elements, using materials that are native to their country or region. You won’t see many intricate, curvy, Rococo, or Baroque-style design on their Japanese furniture. Their designs are straightforward, linear, and bereft of unnecessary embellishment, save for the occasional engraving. Overall, their aesthetic is very easy to the eyes. You won’t feel claustrophobic or overwhelmed by a lot of details.

The rooms are separated by sliding wooden doors. The beds, if any, are low and close to the floor. Traditionally, the Japanese sleep on cots or mattresses that are laid on the floor. You also won’t find your usual fluffy couch in their living room. What you will find are pillows that are large and comfortable enough for you to sit in.

Japanese homes also have a coffee table, but it is significantly lower than Western designs. The floors are covered in thick carpets that are usually solid-colored, which means that walking around the house barefoot or wearing only socks, instead of the usual footwear, is necessary.

The dining area is also remarkably different from those in Western households. For one thing, you won’t find chairs. The dining table may be long but still as low as the coffee table. When dining, one must sit on the floor. If you are not very traditional, you can use pillows or cushions to make mealtimes more comfortable.

A typical Japanese home’s design differs greatly from Western ones, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing. In fact, having a lot of open space and minimal clutter can do wonders for your mindset and mood and can have a relaxing effect on you.
